English Language Instructor for LINC

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Language Instructors provide education and training to students in the Language Instruction for Newcomers to Canada (LINC) program within the PEI Institute of Adult and Community Education. This program located in Charlottetown aims to teach Canadian cultures and norms as well as other relevant subject areas which will assist with Newcomer integration and settlement in Canada. 

Instructor duties include:

  • Prepare, design, and deliver lesson plans using the Canadian Language Benchmark standards measuring reading, writing, listening, and speaking competence in the English language.
  • Plan appropriate activities/field trips/presenters to complement curriculum activities.
  • Assist in developing methodology and tools to effectively support student success.
  • Deliver excellence in learning-centered instruction using portfolio-based language assessment (PBLA) as well as effectively planning and preparing for classes and student success.
  • Create a comfortable, non-threatening, and engaging environment for the students to be aware of cultural differences and ensure that the rights of all students are respected.
  • Develop students’ understanding and appreciation for Canadian society, culture, and traditions.
  • Respond to inquiries using tact, diplomacy and discretion when dealing with colleagues and students.
  • Monitor and evaluate student performance and provide constructive feedback.
  • Complete and submit monthly attendance reports and other necessary forms.
  • Other instructor related duties as required.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • TESL Certification completed, in progress or willingness to obtain is required.
  • Excellent interpersonal, and communication skills (written & verbal) are required.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively within a team. 
  • The follow items are considered assets:
    • Bachelor’s degree in education.
    • Experience working with diverse communities.
    • PBLA training and experience.
    • Understanding of Canadian Language Benchmarks.

In accordance with the Collective Agreement of the International Union of Operating Engineers Local 942.

Salary:

$27.46 - $34.05 per hour (30 hrs/wk)
